EPCG and Japan’s PowerX signed a memorandum targeting about 500 MWh of battery storage over an initial three-year period. The commercial opportunity is to coordinate batteries with hydro, expanding solar generation and cross-border trading.
Battery operators across Southeast Europe are increasingly buying solar-heavy midday electricity to sell later, with Bulgaria leading the trend. Serbia has begun recording negative day-ahead prices, creating a potential but variable source of low-cost power for storage.
Serbia’s forecast power balance on 15 October required about 1,027 MW of net imports, while the SEEPEX price reached 368.6 €/MWh at hour 20. Battery storage could reduce exposure to such expensive deficit hours, but would not remove the need for energy imports.
